Blood tests feel like they should be instant, but turnaround times vary widely. Here is what is normal and when to check in.

How long does blood work usually take?

If your blood was drawn at your doctor's office and sent to an outside lab, add a day for transport and processing.

Typical blood work turnaround times
Test typeTypical waitExamples
Routine panels1–2 business daysCBC, metabolic panel, cholesterol
Hormone and vitamin levels2–4 business daysHormone levels, vitamin levels, A1C
Specialized tests1–3 weeksGenetic testing, autoimmune panels, cultures

Does waiting longer mean bad news?

Usually not. Critical values are called to your doctor immediately, often within hours. Mildly abnormal results follow the normal timeline, and different tests run on different machines and schedules, so a partial result does not mean anything about the tests still pending.

Questions to ask your doctor once you have results

  • Which values were out of range, and by how much?
  • Do I need to repeat any test?
  • Do any results change my medications or treatment?
  • When should I get this blood work done again?

Why some blood tests take longer

Send-out tests

Your clinic's lab cannot run everything. Specialized tests get shipped to reference labs, which adds days.

Batching

Some tests are only run on certain days of the week.

Confirmatory testing

An abnormal result often gets re-run to confirm before it is reported, which is good practice but adds time.

Portal delays

Sometimes results are ready but not yet released to your patient portal.

Why the portal shows results before your doctor calls

Since the 21st Century Cures Act information-blocking rules took effect, most test results are released to patients electronically the moment they're finalized — with no waiting period for physician review. That's why a report can land in MyChart at 9pm on a Friday, written in language meant for other clinicians, with nobody available to explain it.

The transparency is a good thing. The delivery is brutal. If you've already opened the report and can't make sense of it, our plain-language guide to reading a pathology report walks through the vocabulary section by section.

When should you call about blood work results?

  • Routine labs have taken more than 4 business days.
  • Specialized tests have taken longer than the timeframe you were given.
  • You feel significantly worse while waiting.
  • What to ask: "Have all of my results come back from the lab, or are any still pending?"

Common questions

How long does it take to get blood test results?

Routine blood work: 1 to 2 business days. Specialized tests: up to 3 weeks.

Why haven't my blood test results shown up in the portal?

Portals sometimes lag the lab by a day or two. Some results are held until your doctor reviews them. If it has been more than 4 business days, call the office.

Is it normal for one test to come back before the others?

Yes. Different tests run on different machines and schedules. A partial result does not mean anything about the tests still pending.

Do abnormal blood results come back faster?

Critical values are called to your doctor immediately, often within hours. Mildly abnormal results follow the normal timeline.
