How to read your blood test results

Read every line as three pieces: the test, your value, and the reference range beside it. Anything outside that range gets flagged, usually in red or with an H or L. Then ask three questions — how far outside is it, is it moving compared with last time, and does it fit my symptoms. Complete blood count (CBC)
The CBC counts the cells in your blood. It's the most commonly ordered test and the one most likely to be repeated, because the trend matters more than any single draw.

What the reference range really means
A reference range isn't a definition of health. It's the interval that covers roughly the middle 95 percent of results from a healthy population tested at that specific lab. By construction, about one in twenty perfectly healthy people falls outside it — and if you're given a panel of fifteen tests, the odds that at least one comes back flagged are better than even.
Ranges also vary between labs and between analyzers. Comparing your value against a range you found online, or against a range printed on a report from a different lab, is one of the most common ways people frighten themselves unnecessarily.
Three things that matter more than the flag
How far outside the range it is
Portals mark a value one point out exactly the same as one far out. Ask for the actual number and the distance, not the color.
Which direction it's moving
A hemoglobin of 11.5 means something very different if last year's was 11.7 than if it was 14.2. Trends drive decisions; single values rarely do.
Whether it fits the rest of the picture
A flagged value with no symptoms, no medication change, and no supporting abnormality on the same panel is usually noise. Clinicians read the panel as a whole.
What blood tests can't tell you
No routine blood test diagnoses cancer. A CBC can show anemia or an abnormal white cell count that prompts further investigation, and tumor markers such as PSA or CA-125 are useful for monitoring known disease, but they also rise for entirely benign reasons. A diagnosis requires imaging and, in nearly every case, a biopsy — which is a separate wait with its own typical timeline.
