My HDL Is Low — What Does That Mean?

What HDL tells you

HDL is sometimes called good cholesterol because people with higher levels tend to have fewer heart problems. Low HDL is often part of a bigger pattern: high triglycerides, belly weight, and rising blood sugar.

HDL feeds directly into heart risk calculators like PREVENT, so a low HDL can raise your score even when total cholesterol looks fine.

What helps

Regular aerobic activity, quitting smoking, losing extra weight, and cutting refined carbs and sugar tend to raise HDL modestly and lower triglycerides. The bigger win is usually the lower overall risk, not the HDL number itself.

Common questions

Is low HDL bad if my LDL is normal?

It still adds some heart risk, which calculators account for. It is worth looking at triglycerides and blood sugar too.

Can very high HDL be a problem?

Very high HDL (above about 80 to 100) is not always protective. Ask your doctor if yours is unusually high.
